Community Health

Family in front of their houseA number of basic health needs in a poverty-stricken area cannot be addressed in a clinic. With the provision of simple health education about the care of newborns, maternal health, and regulating high blood pressure, the locals can live healthier and happier lives.

Community Health Workers

Community health workers (CHWs) are trusted members of the community, selected by the community leaders, and supervised by community health professionals. They learn health promotion and basic health care through a program designed by the World Health Organization and sponsored by Global Health Action and the Episcopal Church of Haiti. Creole, the language of the people, is the language of instruction. The training staff is Haitian.

They learn about providing good nutrition based on available food, how to treat infant diarrhea with a simple rehydration formula, and when to refer their patients to a clinic.

In 2007, HHP and their Haitian counterpart, OCDES, will sponsor at least three people from the communities around Cherident to receive CHW training. The program at Darbonne is led by the staff of Hospital St. Croix in Leogane. It is an eight-week program, taught in two-week blocks, with intervals during which the trainees work in their local communities to determine the most important needs of their own communities. CHWs will expand the reach of the clinic and provide vital health education to many people in Grand Colline.
