Education and Crop Farming

Planning for the future requires essential skills. Two affiliated organizations help develop these skills in the region by teaching Haitians modern farming techniques and educating the children of the region.

Education

Schoolchildren get a nutritious lunchChildren are the hope of Haiti. Their education is the vital cornerstone to the economic development of the Grande Colline region.

Twenty years ago, nearly every one of the thousands of children in the Grande Colline region was illiterate.  Today, there is hope for a brighter future, thanks to the Haiti Education Foundation, led by the inspirational Frances Landers of El Dorado, Arkansas. Now over 13,000 children are being educated in dozens of schools across the region.

Farming

Since 1997, Floresta has worked in the Grande Colline region of Haiti to plant thousands of trees that supply soils with nutrients and families with food.

Crops grow with help from FlorestaThrough farmer cooperatives, Floresta empowers villagers to make the most of their land, planting compatible crops and trees, and learning important irrigation techniques. Farmers receive up to six-fold increases in crop yield.

Beyond trees and farming, Floresta’s successful credit program lifts families out of poverty. Often, in Haiti, it’s a Haitian woman – a single parent – who finds a new life of hope through the helping hand of Floresta.
