About Haiti

Map of HaitiHaiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, with a population of over 8 million people in an area the size of Maryland. Throughout the country, the lack of available and accessible health care is a major problem. Haiti has the highest infant and maternal mortality, the worst malnutrition, and the worst AIDS problem in the Americas (Pan-American Health Organization, www.paho.org).

According to PAHO, 40% of the population has no access to health care, more than 70% of the population has no access to medications, and only half of the children are vaccinated. Although the rural areas are safer than cities in terms of violence, they are much more likely to lack clean water and adequate sanitation, so the people living in rural areas have much higher rates of waterborne diseases (World Health Organization, 2006).
