Medika Mamba to the Rescue!

April 11-17, 2007
by Anne Wuerker, Ph.D.

I returned to Cherident to follow up on our earlier trip, this time accompanied by Don Miller. Our trip was timed well, as it turned out. The 50 kilograms of Medika Mamba we ordered had just arrived, in three five-gallon tubs. Our program will begin with four children, since our supply of Medika Mamba is just enough for the full, six-week treatment for four children. If this is successful, we will expand the program.

Medika Mamba is a fortified, peanut-butter-based RUTF (Ready to Use Therapeutic Food). With Medika Mamba, the clinic staff can begin to treat severely malnourished children right away. This program is based on a similar, successful program run by Partners in Health in the Central Plateau of Haiti. Medika Mamba is produced in Cap Haitien through Meds and Foods for Kids.

The first patient to be enrolled was a two and a half year old child who is 25% under the normal weight for her height. She can’t walk yet. Three other malnourished children completed our pilot group. There are many more children who need this program and are just waiting for the opportunity.

The clean water now available is an important part of the program. Each family will be able to use clean water for drinking and preparing food.

Other projects make progress as well. The clinic’s laboratory will be ready soon, which will greatly expand the diagnostic and treatment capabilities of the clinic staff.

The community was much quieter than it was in February. The children were back in school. The clinic was very busy though, with long lines of people waiting to be seen on the days the doctor is there. The people of Cherident are clearly grateful for the work HHP is doing in their community.
